What is Delta-9 THC?

Delta-9 THC (Δ9 THC, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is an isomer of CBD found in industrial hemp. While Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC have similar names, they are different compounds with different characteristics. According to the National Cancer Institute, Delta-9 is defined as “an analogue of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) & Isomer of Cannabidiol (CBD) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. [Delta-8-THC] binds to the cannabinoid G-protein coupled receptor CB1, located in the central nervous system. This agent exhibits a lower psychotropic potency than [delta-9-THC], the primary form of THC found in cannabis.” In either case, the carbon double bond determines the molecule, so a double bond on the eighth carbon, gives you Delta-8, and a double bond on the ninth carbon gives you Delta-9. This continues for all the Deltas.
